Well this year was kind of a strange one. The fishing was pretty good earlier, but as the summer heated up, the FWP ended up closing most of the rivers until fall.
But there are some very predictable times. Spring is good prior to run off. The Gallatin and Jefferson both fish well in April and early May. Probably the best times on both of these rivers is right after run off, in July. The first 2 weeks of July are exceptional, and the last 2 are usually pretty good. Alternate rivers
during the last 2 weeks of July are the upper Madison, and the Yellowstone.
(These can also be combined with the Gallatin and Jeff, also.)
Another good early season river is the lower Madison. It will fish well all during the spring, and is a good bet starting around March thru May. Some GREAT dry fly fishing. Good caddis hatches from Mothers Day, thru May. Lots of mayflies starting in April.
August is good for hoppers on the Yellowstone, and other rivers, on into September.
